Bummed ...

Well, I guess if this is the worst thing that I’ve got to be bummed about, then my life must be going pretty well (it’s not but this is what I’m writing about today anyway, so deal). My favorite morning show has been cancelled. I’ve been listening to this station since I came to Houston over 13 years ago, and I’m actually considering deleting it from my programmed radio dial. Last Friday was the last time I heard the infectious laugh of Maria Todd and the brutally honest albeit entertaining rantings of Atom Smasher. After hearing the unbelievable gossip around the water cooler that the new station owners had cancelled the show, I thought I’d do some research and see what I could find out. Low and behold, I found this article this morning! I couldn’t believe it!

"As good as they are, they had a specific appeal with the 25 and under (age) range," said Patrick Fant, market manager for Cumulus Media Partners, which has owned KRBE since May. "We're hoping to broaden that a bit. We're about to introduce the market's next big thing."

That is one of the most untrue statements I’ve ever heard in my life. I’m over 30, my co-worker is 29, and several friends of mine who I know listen are around my age. I listened to that show on my drive to work religiously to get me through my morning commutes, which was constantly bombarded with calls from other loyal fans/listeners, and most of the callers sounded to me like they were well above the 25 year age range. Maybe you should check your reports or come up with a more believable lame-ass excuse!

"It ultimately comes down to giving the listeners what they want," Fant said.

If that is truly the case, how in the world could you possibly justify getting rid of the stars of your station, Atom Smasher & Maria Todd. Yes, Atom is edgy, but he's hilarious and if you have an ounce of a sense of humor in your entire body, you'd know not to take what he says literally (he's being comical)! I don’t think I’ve ever heard more compliments given to any of your DJ’s (and yes, I listen to all of them and love them all), as Maria. She rocks, she's got class, she’s hilarious, and her laugh, need I say more?!

Smasher and Todd were told of their termination immediately after Friday's show. Shortly after, Todd said, her work e-mail address was shut down and her office keys were confiscated. “They just said the station was going in another direction,” she said.

I don’t know how long Atom was with the station, but if this is how you treat someone who has been loyal to your station for 14 years (Maria), I don’t think I want to continue my loyalty to you. Good luck. I hope your reports prove you much success with your newfound old-fogie direction. In the meantime, I'll be searching the internet to find out what lucky station is going to cash in on your unfortunate mistake and scooping up either of these two to make them my new favorite station!
